Can I Use an Outdoor Kitchen in Winter?

Yes, you can absolutely use an outdoor kitchen during the winter. By implementing some of the strategies below, you will increase your odds for a successful and enjoyable grilling experience!

5 Strategies for Using Your Outdoor Kitchen During the Winter

prepare for the elements

1. Prepare for the Elements

It may seem obvious, but it’s important to always dress for the conditions you are in! Dress warm, complete with a hat and gloves.

This is also a great opportunity to fire up an outdoor heating system if you have it. Whether it’s a nearby fire pit, fireplace, or patio heater, any of these features will help keep your grilling space more toasty warm.

2. Make Sure Your Grill is Good to Go

Before you turn on the grill, make sure the hoses and regulators are in working order. Sometimes, freezing temperatures can cause cracks to form along the lines. If cracks have formed, unfortunately, the lines will have to be replaced before you can grill again.

3. Start Preheating Earlier

When you’re grilling in the colder months, you have to work against the tides in terms of temperature. It will take quite a bit longer to get your grill preheated in January than it will in July! It can take up to 2x longer for your grill to heat up during the winter months, so make sure you get started earlier than usual.

4. Adjust Cooking Times

Cold weather and blustery winds can also affect the stability of your grill’s temperatures. To combat this, we recommend using a digital thermometer to keep track of the temperature of your food, rather than relying on the grill gauge on the hood. This will give you a more accurate reading of how your food is cooking.

Additionally, if you’re planning to smoke a brisket or cook something for a longer period of time… it’s a good idea to cover your grill with an insulated blanket (not an affiliate!). This layer of insulation will help stabilize the temperatures in your grill and also provide a bit more fuel efficiency.

5. Resist the Urge to Check Your Food Too Often

Perhaps the most difficult tip of all: try not to open the hood too often! With the cooler temperatures, every time you open the hood, a whoosh of precious hot air evacuates from your grill… making it even more difficult to keep temperatures hot and stable.

How do I Prepare my Outdoor Kitchen for the Winter?

Now that you know it’s possible to use your outdoor kitchen in the winter… is there anything special you need to do to prepare it for the cooler season? Yes!

While your grill is perfectly usable all year round, other appliances will be susceptible to damage in freezing temperatures. To protect your investment, winterize your sink, refrigerator, or anything with a water line. This simply means you’ll have to drain the water lines and make sure the pipes are empty. This will prevent the problem of a burst, frozen pipe. It’s also a good idea to turn off any appliances that are connected to electricity, just as an added precaution.

Additionally, it’s a good idea to purchase an island cover for your outdoor kitchen. Just like a grill cover, this will provide an added layer of protection from snow, hail, ice, and the general harshness of winter. If you plan to do some wintertime grilling, you can order custom covers that allow for easy access to the grill portion of your outdoor kitchen.
