Outdoor Kitchen Safety: 5 Things to Plan Before You Build

Planning outdoor kitchen safety starts long before your grill is installed.
And getting the planning sequence right can help you avoid costly surprises later.
In this episode of The Outdoor Kitchen Experience, we break down how to plan an outdoor kitchen safely—and why the order of your decisions matters.
Before choosing finishes, countertops, or storage, start with the space itself. What surrounds your kitchen? Are there walls, fences, rooflines, pergolas, or combustible materials nearby? Is there enough room for people to move comfortably around the cooking area?
Then comes appliance selection. Your built-in grill, side burners, griddle, and other heat-producing appliances can affect everything from cutouts and clearances to ventilation and utility requirements.
We’ll also explain why outdoor kitchen ventilation should never be an afterthought. Natural gas and liquid propane behave differently, making proper vent placement an important part of outdoor kitchen design. Coyote’s installation guidance, for example, requires ventilation for built-in islands and specifies different vent placement based on fuel type.
Once those safety considerations are established, you can refine countertop space, walkways, bar seating, storage, and finishes. RTA’s design guidance recommends approximately 3.5 feet of comfortable walkway clearance and thoughtful landing space around cooking appliances.
The sequence is simple: space → appliances → ventilation and clearances → functionality → aesthetics.
