Outdoor Kitchen Ventilation | Is Your Contractor Planning it?

Outdoor kitchen ventilation is an often overlooked, yet essential part of the building process. In order for your grill island to be safe to use… You’re going to need ventilation!

Yet somehow… Many contractors are not aware of how to provide proper ventilation.

Why?

Well, most contractors are considered generalists. Outdoor kitchen construction requires specialized knowledge that they may not have! So when you’re in the process of hiring a contractor… There are a couple questions you’ll need to ask them about outdoor kitchen ventilation. What are they?

First, are they using combustible materials to construct your island? What precautions are being taken? Your contractor may want to use combustible materials for your outdoor kitchen. This isn’t necessarily a problem… But it needs to be properly planned to ensure safety. Most commonly, the precautions include using insulated jackets for appliances. If your contractor is using combustible materials… And doesn’t have a plan in place… Look elsewhere! That’s a significant safety concern that’s not worth the risk.

As for the second question… Ask your contractor: What is their plan to properly vent the island? Depending on the fuel you’re using for your grill… This is important! Natural gas rises. Therefore, ventilation needs to be higher up on the island. Conversely, liquid propane sinks. So ventilation needs to be lower on the island in this case.

If your contractor understands this… That’s fantastic! Your outdoor kitchen island will be safe to use. And when it comes to outdoor kitchen ventilation… That’s all we’re after. Safety.
