What Goes into an RTA Outdoor Kitchen | Insider Look at Our Manufacturing Facility

Interested to see how an RTA outdoor kitchen is made? In this video, we walk through Jami Jenkins (a vacation rental owner and RTA customer) through exactly how her outdoor kitchen was made. As you’ll see, there’s a lot that happens behind the scenes!

An RTA outdoor kitchen begins with the process of mixing concrete. We have a detailed tracking process for each batch. How much fiber, concrete mix, and pigment that goes into every batch is meticulously recorded. This standard ensures consistency across the board… And that your outdoor kitchen matches every expectation!

Once the concrete is mixed, it’s time to go over to the pouring station. Both the island and countertops are poured into molds, to ensure exact specifications. It’s all hands on deck as multiple members of the team work together to get each countertop and panel made. Once everything is poured… It’s time to let the panels and countertops cure overnight. In the morning, your panels and countertops will be removed from their molds and move onto the next stage.

Your RTA outdoor kitchen is getting there! Now, cutouts have to be made to make room for your appliances. It seems simple… But the cutting process has to be exact! It requires a high attention to detail, as your appliances should have a perfect fit upon installation. Once that process has been completed and the finish is ready to go… It’s time to get packed and prepared for shipment!

If you want to see the rest of the RTA outdoor kitchen manufacturing process… You’ll just have to tune into the rest of this video!

Hello, I’m Amanda. Hi, Amanda. I’m Jamie. [music] Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Welcome to Cambridge City. Yeah, it’s a beautiful city. Thank you. Very [music] quaint. We love our little town. So this was the whole very beginning of the entire manufacturing of the RTA

00:31
kitchens. This one room is [music] where it all happened. They mixed here in a bucket with a hand mixer and would [music] do only like 100 lbs of concrete mix at a time. They would mix here. They would pour here. They had three tables. They would process, do the cut, color,

00:48
grinding, and then they would crate [music] back there. and everything was done in this one room. Once we started getting more orders, more people knew about RTA, it’s just expanded [music] and exploded like crazy. Um, so we have expanded throughout the entire [music]

01:02
60,000 square foot of the building, okay, where it originally was here. So these are where the side panels, front [music] panels, back panels are poured and chiseled edge tops. So like this is a white top, but it’s chiseled edge. So it’s [music] not clean edge like

01:18
yours, but it’s the same color mix. the fibers in there just like it’s all the same just a different pigment in. Mhm. So like this is stack stone molds. So we [music] do all the stack stone in here and all the weathered wood in here. Um and then chiseled [music] edge tops and

01:34
then on the other side is the modern tops, clean edge tops. So like this is the clean how the clean edges are made. So it’s laid [music] out piece by piece. This is a bar top that they’re pouring and then a grill top with the the cutouts where the cutouts are. That’s

01:49
like your grill cut [music] out and then they pour it by hand and lay it out. So this is how ours was made. Yes, this is how yours was made. Since [music] your top is a modern top or clean edge, it was laid out on this board just like this one [music] is over here.

02:04
So what we’re seeing here is the underside. Then this would be the top side. Yes. Yep. This part is the top. And then when they pull it out every morning, then it will be the way that it’s supposed to be cuz when they lay out for the blueprint, [music] they lay it

02:17
backwards. So, it’s a 24-hour set kind of. Yep. In the morning, they’ll pull it out of the molds. Um, and then it will sit for a day and then go [music] to processing where they cut and color. So, this is another expanded area of the processing area, but this is where we

02:40
focus on countertops and [music] our modern and plank finishes. So they’re just sealed [music] and get ready to go by the grinding and making everything smooth and ready to go. So a few weeks ago, mine were sitting right here. They were they were laid out right here. Yep.

02:57
Yep. And you would have had your work order number. Oh, really? So that’s what that represents then. Okay. So this is the batch plant um that we [music] had installed in the summer of 2021. It came in all different pieces and so the guys had to put it all together. But

03:14
has been a game changer [music] when when it comes to creating our mix each day. The mix is made into these super sacks and [music] it’s augured up into the batch plant and then all the additives are in based on what [music] we put in the computer and then it’s all

03:29
mixed and then it’s dropped down in the grout hog. So then they’re able to move the grout hog to the molds and pour in [music] directly through there. And then so in here is the computer that we [music] um decide how it is all made for each uh each batch. It’s all computerized and uh

03:49
we log every batch that [music] we make. We log every all the ingredients that were put in it. The temperature of the day, was it humid? Was it cloudy? [music] Was it rainy? Because something you would never think would affect that does affect [music] um how the mix is.

04:08
So, this is our appliance area. Um, each order that a customer orders, they [music] order with their appliances that go with it. Um, their Coyote appliances. So, we have [music] them in stock and we pull them and ship them with each person’s kitchen. There are a ton of

04:23
appliances in here. Grills, side burners, grles, [music] drawer cabinets, access doors, grill covers, anything that you can think of. Paper towel holders. Paper [music] towel holders. Exactly. I don’t know that’s a thing. So, we have so many different [music]

04:39
appliances to offer. We need more space to be able to stock them. Um, right now we barely have space to [music] hold about five containers worth of appliances. We’re hoping to have space to [music] hold like seven to eight containers um next year. How much of the building do you

04:56
currently occupy? Uh, all 60,000 square feet. Oh, wow. Yes. Um, yep. We started [music] originally obviously in the casting room like I showed you, but then we moved through maybe half of the building and [music] then now we’re full capacity and not sure if if we’re going to have to

05:15
build or move or expand somehow. Yeah. So, the the streets are only so close. [laughter] So, um, so yeah, that’s the that’s the plan is to figure out that next step. [music] Um, perfect problem to have though. It is. It is. So, it was nice because it’s just

05:32
an open space that [music] we’re able to utilize, but we just need more of it. So, this is the crating area that um all of the crates are built from the ground up [music] using all local material that we get from local hardware stores. Um and [music] our pallets are made locally

05:55
as well. So each panel is put in the crate in [music] order that needs to be uncrdated. So um it all starts from the flat and then builds up [music] in the rectangle box around it. Some people are not ready to receive [music] their crates yet. So they we

06:26
have them under storage, but if someone is not ready for theirs, like say they’re still pouring their patio or whatever, we try and make it where [music] we don’t start it until it’s closer to that time. So then we’re not having to store them [music] um and take up the space cuz like I

06:40
said, we literally are out of space. Well, Jamie, I hope that you have learned a lot in this tour [music] of the building. Um, each section has its own components, so [music] it’s kind of nice to see each part that your kitchen went through uh until it got to your house.

06:56
Absolutely. I really enjoyed it. I did learn a lot. Um, I liked the [music] pouring station watching them do that and the just the texture and consistency of the concrete was really fascinating. Yeah. Yeah. It’s neat [music] how it’s it starts from nothing and truly is an

07:14
amazing product once you get it. It is. We were [music] super pleased when we got it when our crate arrived. Yeah. And we unboxed and realized there’s heft [music] to this. Yes. This is a substantial product and now that we can see exactly the labor that went into it. Absolutely.

07:29
The skill and the science and the whole bit makes us appreciate it that much more. Oh, that’s [music] awesome. Yep. We appreciate you coming and seeing the whole whole process. Best part of my day.
