If you’re interested in working with RTA Outdoor Living for your outdoor kitchen project… you may have heard that a scratch coat option is available if you have a custom finish you want to apply yourself.
If this is something you’re interested in doing, inevitably you’ll wonder: “How do you install a scratch coat RTA outdoor kitchen?”
RTA’s scratch coat option isn’t something that is publicly discussed often, so it’s not surprising you would have this question! Thankfully, the process of applying a finish to a scratch coat RTA outdoor kitchen is quite simple. In this article, you will learn how to finish a scratch coat RTA outdoor kitchen, and how to order one.
1. Open Crates & Move Panels to Assembly Location
The process starts the same way as any other RTA outdoor kitchen install: you’ll crack open the crates and move your panels to the assembly location. To make this process easier, make sure your backyard is cleared up so you can maneuver the panels without obstacles in the way.
2. Assemble the Island Structure
Next, you will assemble the four exterior walls of your outdoor kitchen. With the provided L-brackets and screws, bolt all 4 corners in place.

3. Mix & Apply Mortar
Here’s where the scratch coat part of the install comes in! Now that you have your island panels in place, you have the base to which you’ll apply your finish to. At this stage, mix your mortar material and begin applying it to the exterior with a trowel.
4. Apply Finish Material of Choice
As you’re applying a layer of cladding material (mortar) to the island panels, you can also begin applying the finish material. Whether it’s stone or brick, you will also apply a little mortar to the back of each piece and place it onto the island structure. Generally, best practice is to start from the bottom of the island structure, working your way around to the top.
5. Let the Finish Cure
Once the finish has been completely applied, allow the cladding material to fully set before proceeding further. Follow the instructions for the mortar mix you used, but in most cases you can expect a 24 hour cure time.
6. Install Countertops & Appliances
Once the finishing material has cured, you’re off to the finishing touches! From here, you will place your countertops and install the appliances. After that, you’re done and ready to grill!
