But just as with any other outdoor feature… There’s a whole host of considerations to go through before you make a final decision.

At minimum, your outdoor TV should be weatherproof! But there’s also display quality, brightness, and many more points to consider.

In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about an outdoor television… And share with you the top brands out there!

Let’s kick off with the buyer’s guide.

Outdoor TV Buying Guide

When you’re browsing an outdoor TV… There are a few categories you have to ponder before you find the right fit!

First off…

Is the Price Right?

For homeowners considering an outdoor TV… They’re often hit with some significant sticker shock!

It’s true… An outdoor TV costs far more than your average indoor version.

You’re probably used to being able to purchase a high-quality TV for a few hundred dollars.

But when it comes to an outdoor TV…

The bare minimum price starts at around $1,200. Most options will sit around $2,000 and go up from there.

Point is, be prepared to shell out some extra cash! These TV’s are a significant investment for your outdoor space. (Same goes for an outdoor kitchen!)

And since you’ll be spending a large sum… You’ll want to be sure it performs well in the outdoor environment.

Your Outdoor TV Should be (Nearly) Indestructible

With the premium price tag… An outdoor TV better live up to its claims!

Thankfully, they typically do.

These all weather outdoor TVs are specifically designed to withstand the elements. Rain, wind, snow, direct sunlight, and dust should not impact the performance of your TV.

It’s also important to consider temperature ranges. Outdoor TVs are also designed to withstand extreme temperatures.

If you live in an area that regularly plunges down to sub zero temps (-20° or more)… You’ll want to double check the brand you purchase can handle it first!

The ideal outdoor TV should be built like a tank. (Also true of a grill island!)

There should be extra-durable protection on the screen… And a meticulously sealed exterior to prevent water and particulates from entering the appliance. (Thankfully, this is standard practice!)

So far, so good!

Brightness is where you begin to see the nuance.

Is Your TV Bright Enough?

people sitting at outdoor table with outdoor tv on wall

What’s the point of having an outdoor TV if you can’t see the screen?

That’s where brightness comes in.

And for an outdoor TV… There’s two broad categories that indicate brightness.

There’s outdoor TVs designed for use in full sun… And yet others are designed for partial sun or full shade.

How do you know which option is best?

It comes down to where you’re locating your TV. If it won’t be shaded at all… Strongly consider a full sun TV.

Otherwise, a partial sun variety should do just fine. (Especially if it will be under the shade of a gazebo or pavilion.)

A more concrete way to understand brightness is through nits.

Nits?

No, we’re not talking about lice! Nits are actually a unit of measure for brightness. The more nits something has… The more intense the brightness is.

So if you want an outdoor TV that performs well in full sun… You’ll want the highest amount of nits possible.

For quick reference, most outdoor TVs will sit somewhere between 500 – 2,000 nits for brightness.

Now, adequate brightness is great… But it’s not the full picture.

Definition is All in the Details

Naturally, picture quality is a consideration for any TV… Whether it’s an outdoor-rated TV or not!

So this category should come as no surprise to you.

However, there’s something to know about the picture quality.

Compared to their indoor counterparts… Outdoor TVs tend to lag behind in this category.

The picture just isn’t quite as clear.

Current top-notch indoor TVs have achieved an 8K resolution… Amounting to the tune of over 33 million pixels.

Whereas an outdoor TV will cap out at 4K resolution. And considering most streaming platforms broadcast at a maximum of a 4K resolution… The extra pixels likely won’t be missed.

And for a 4K outdoor TV specifically… You’ll have to consider the difference between HDR and UHD.

4K HDR vs 4K UHD: What’s the Difference?

Depending on the outdoor TV you’re interested in… You’ll find an option for 4K HDR or 4K UHD.

What’s the difference? Is one option better than the other?

First, let’s describe what they are.

UHD stands for “ultra HD”. This simply refers to the exact number of pixels in the TV display. In the case of 4K definition, this will be 3840 x 2160.

HDR, on the other hand, stands for “high dynamic range”. This doesn’t have anything to do with the pixels.

Instead, HDR is referring to the display’s ability to make adjustments for optimal visuals. You’ll have more control over color, contrast, and brightness with these displays.

So… Is one better than the other?

Well, it’s not exactly a straight comparison. In truth, UHD and HDR are two different things.

All 4K TVs will have the same UHD number… So it’s really whether you want a TV with HDR or not.

With HDR being a bit more dynamic… You can have better picture quality results, particularly outdoors. However, it’s not a necessary feature!

It’s all down to personal preference.

Outdoor TV Functionality

When we refer to the functionality of your outdoor TV… We’re really drilling down on connectivity.

Do you want cable TV, streaming services, or both?

With the increasing number of cord-cutters… A growing majority of homeowners are seeking an outdoor smart TV.

Having a TV preloaded with Roku, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, or Chromecast apps certainly makes for a plug-and-play experience.

And indeed… The most popular outdoor TVs are often smart TVs!

However, there are still plenty of non-smart outdoor TV options out there.

You can have it hooked up to your regular cable or satellite service… And there’s typically an HDMI cable to attach a separate streaming device if you so choose.

Alright. With that said… Let’s review some outdoor TV brands!

Currently available in 55”, 65”, and 75” sizes… You’ll almost certainly find an option that suits your viewing needs.

The Neptune series features weatherproof construction… And can operate from temperatures of -22°F to 122°F.

For resolution, you’re looking at a 4K UHD display… With HDR technology as an added bonus.

Peerless-AV also constructed these TVs with an IPS panel. This is a type of LED panel that still performs well at different viewing angles.

That said, these TVs are backlit from the edges only. Therefore, there may be some areas with uneven brightness.

Being a smart TV… The Neptune series comes pre-loaded with the WebOS operating system from LG.

They also tout the inclusion of the ThinQ AI homescreen. If you have compatible IoT smart devices (Lighting, thermostats, etc.)… You’ll be able to control them from your homescreen.

These TVs are both bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled. There’s also an option for ethernet connectivity, if desired.

All TVs in this series will come with a voice controllable remote and tilting wall mount (valued at $199.00).

Of course, the Seura full sun series has weatherproof construction… And can operate in temperature extremes of -40°F to 140°F. An impressive built in heating and cooling system makes this possible!

Like Peerless-AV’s Neptune, you’ll be getting a 4K UHD and HDR display here.

FAQ

It depends on what you’re looking for. If you want your TV to be safeguarded from the outdoor environment… Buying a TV that can handle harsh weather is important! However, you will have to make some compromises on picture quality compared to an indoor TV.

The biggest advantage of owning an outdoor TV is their weatherproof construction. You don’t have to worry about your TV getting damaged in snow, rain, wind, and dust. Some are also designed to be used in a full sun environment, which significantly reduces glare. The main disadvantages are that outdoor TVs are far more expensive than their indoor counterparts… And the picture quality tends to lag behind indoor versions.

Outdoor TVs have fantastic performance in the outdoor environment… Including resistance to snow, rain, wind, and dust. Additionally, they can withstand extreme changes in temperature. Not to mention, they bring the enjoyment of TV-centered entertainment to the outdoors.
